April 2020 has been a month of chaos and unrest, and most of us are feeling a bit lost and disoriented. But throughout these days, music has been a constant. We are delighted to share with your our virtual meet-n-greet artist for April -- Jennifer Barger!
Based in Canton, Ga., Jennifer's melodic voice is almost mesmerizing. Music4CHIEF has been a fan of Jennifer from the very first time she graced our stage at a fundraising event last summer. Taking the stage at a crowded local restaurant, the moment she started singing, all eyes turned towards her. She has a passion for music we can all appreciate, and a genuine friendly personality that adds to her charm. We are happy to introduce this talented young lady to you.
What's your favorite genre of music to play?
Folk and Irish, as well as old jazz.
Have you had any formal music training, or are you self-taught?
I am both self-taught and formally-trained. I learned by ear to sing harmonies when I was little. My oldest sister taught me classical piano, but it was always very hard for me to read sheet music. When I was in high school, I learned guitar, and those lessons taught me so much about how music really works and what kind of music I like to play, and so on. Then, soon after that I started vocal training to learn how to really use my voice to its full potential, and take care of it, as well.
Who is your biggest music influence?
Life influences my music and many things in life are inspiring to me, so it's hard to say! I think life experiences influence my writing the most. There are many artists who influence me, as well. To name a few: The Wailin' Jennys, Alison Krauss, local Georgia band Highbeams, and more.
Do you have a favorite concert memory?
One I attended would have to be a tie between Michael Bublé in 2019, and my very first concert to see The Peasall Sisters at Dahlonega's Crimson Moon. A favorite concert I've performed is probably opening for Keith Harkin, and any time I get to collaborate with other local artists.
Who is your favorite musician or band?
Keith Harkin
The Wailin' Jennys
Jim Croce
Alison Krauss
Dean Martin
...and many others!
Do you have a favorite song?
Or any song you have a special connection with?
"A Living Prayer" is one of my favorite songs. It is not only beautiful, but it is powerful and is a great inspiration to me. (That's a hard question!)
Outside of music, do you have any other talents or hobbies?
I love to write stories and do hand lettering, bake (especially French macarons!), and I have a way with little kids. I love being a big sister and an aunt.
How about your long-term life goals?
Honestly, my life goal is to love and encourage those around me, and to learn from those around me, and become better at these things as life goes on.
What's a question about music that no one's ever asked you, but you wish they would?
the question: I host a video series and one question I ask on there that I've never been asked before is, "What is your goal with music, and what do you hope to accomplish through your music?"
the answer: My answer to that would be that my goal is to make people smile, and I hope to bring joy to the people who listen to my music.
What does music do for you personally and/or what do you think music can do for others, especially teenagers?
Often times, there aren't even words to describe what music means to me! It is my driving force. It is one of the things that gives my life meaning and happiness, and I can't imagine life without it. I believe that music is very healing. I believe that it's very revealing, as well, and you can learn a lot about yourself as you discover how to create and be a part of music. Music connects and is very influential and powerful, so I believe it is a tool, as well, to share and promote what you love. For teens, it can be a comfort, a healthy escape, something to work hard for, a character builder, and a fantastic way to express yourself! Everyone should be able to experience music.
Thank you to Jennifer for giving us the opportunity to learn more about her passion for music. She is often playing at various venues throughout north Georgia, so be sure to try to catch a show. I guarantee that you'll walk away a fan!
Make sure you follow her on social media! She can be found on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, or directly on her website - Jennifer Barger Music. And be sure to check out her music series called The Tiny House Sessions!
